The Institut de la Mer de Villefranche (IMEV), through the Villefranche Quantitative Imaging Platform (PIQv), specializes in quantitative imaging, particularly for the study of plankton and aquatic detritus. Engineers and researchers from the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV), part of IMEV, developed two reference instruments: the ZooScan and the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP). PIQv operates these two instruments together with other advanced imaging systems, including the FlowCam, Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB), and PlanktoScope. The instruments operated by PIQv enable the characterization of objects and organisms ranging in size from 20 µm to several centimetres. The acquired images are then classified semi-automatically using the EcoTaxa web application.
